The Department of Cinema & Media Arts in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD) is Canada’s first and foremost film school with three specialized streams of study, premier production facilities, field placements, strong industry as well as independent film & media arts community connections, backed by a stellar faculty of internationally renowned filmmakers, screenwriters & scholars.

York’s Graduate Program in Film offers degrees in Cinema and Media Studies (MA and PhD), Production (MFA), Screenwriting (MFA), and the joint MBA/MFA & MBA/MA degrees.
The largest and most comprehensive Graduate Program of Cinema and Media Arts in Canada continues to build on York University’s longstanding commitment to deliver innovative and interdisciplinary post-graduate training. Our MA, MFA and PhD programs offer state of the art research and teaching facilities (including two research labs featuring Augmented Reality, 3D, locative media and diverse mobile screen interfaces) distinguished by leading edge creation / research and scholarship by internationally acclaimed faculty.
We are situated in the centre of film culture in English Canada. Toronto provides students with exceptional exposure to film screenings (from Bell Lightbox to numerous repertory cinemas), festivals (over 100 film festivals occur each year, including the Toronto International Film Festival, Hot Docs, and Images Festival), and resources (research collections, studios, and industry offices).
