The WA Screen Academy, located on the ECU Mount Lawley campus, was established in 2005, and since then has cemented its reputation as one of Australia’s most innovative and outstanding advanced-level training programs in screen production.
In 2016, the Screen Academy was accepted as a member of CILECT, the International Association of Film and Television Schools; one of only five member schools in Australia. This membership is an acknowledgment of the high quality of teaching and learning at the Academy, and enables international collaboration in both production and research.
The Screen Academy offers a production focused training experience designed to prepare students for the realities and challenges of working in the professional industry. The intensive, one-year or 18-month course develops students’ practical skills and creative vision across a diverse range of screen productions, including short dramas, documentaries, client-based work and web-series.
Students accumulate significant screen credits working on high-quality productions using state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. They are taught and mentored by leading professionals and leave with industry-level skills, a show reel of production work and a strong analytical and theoretical foundation relating to film, television and associated new media applications.
The WA Screen Academy accepts a select number of students in the following areas of specialisation: Producing, Directing, Screenwriting, Cinematography, Sound and Editing.
A unique feature of the program is the WA Screen Academy’s relationship with the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). WAAPA is a world-renowned training course for arts performers and technicians and WA Screen Academy films have helped in building successful careers for many well-known actors.
On completion of the course, graduates will have an impressive personal portfolio comprising short films, documentaries, client-based productions and web-series drama. They will also have valuable broadcast credits, as a program of students’ work is broadcast on the Nine Network.
The WA Screen Academy has partnerships with world-class motion picture camera company ARRI Australia and motion picture production technical company Panther GmbH. The Academy films and documentaries are showcased annually at a gala screening with additional promotion and exposure at local and international festivals, free-to-air broadcasts and web-based platforms. The high level of industry engagement together with quality student productions ensures the WA Screen Academy continues to attract major partners including Nine Perth, Sandbox Productions, the Australian Directors Guild and Constable Care Foundation.
