Theatre and Film at UBC offers a comprehensive range of degrees in the study of Theatre and Film including the option to study in an interdisciplinary environment with Creative Writing and other university disciplines. Developing students’ imaginative, technical, and intellectual skills equally as they prepare to embark on a career in theatre and related arts, is our objective. Courses provide students with core disciplines and knowledge of the diversity of aesthetic practices as well as practical experience. Our aim is to teach students in a liberal arts context preparing them for a wide range of careers in costume and set design, theatre production, acting, teaching, curating, filmmaking, writing, innovative research initiatives, arts administration and academic research.
The Department of Theatre and Film at UBC aims to develop each student’s imaginative, technical and intellectual skills as they prepare to embark on a career in theatre and film, whether it be in practice or research.
We offer a variety of programs at the undergraduate and graduate level in various theatre and film areas including acting, cinema & media studies, creative writing, design and production, directing, film production, film studies and theatre studies. In each program, our courses provide students with both the knowledge and practical experience of each discipline.
Located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people, we are a community of faculty members, practitioners, students, research and support staff, all working together to advance the study and practice of theatre and film.
The Department of Theatre and Film offers several graduate program options for students that will lead to a Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, or PhD Degree, in various specialities in theatre and film.
