The School of Film, Music & Performing Arts fosters a culture of creation and participation. LBU is a proud shaper of, and contributor to, the cultural life of this great Northern city — a city that is the original birthplace of film. The school nurtures the arts pioneers of the future: influencers who will not just reflect the outside world, but impact upon it.
This culture is enabled by a team of experienced practitioners and academics who produce award-winning work of international repute. The school foster an immersive environment that breeds originality, invention and ambition. Join their community of producers, led by staff such as Oscar-nominated cinematographer Phil Robertson and their community of alumni, such as Oscar winner Peter Baumann. This is a school of learning and practice, but also of research. Students, with staff, are currently contributing to a number of live, funded projects, including the exploration of film and performance as a contributor to positive mental health and active aging and creating a new type of documentary film, Mansfield 66/67 with Hollywood producers.

You will be taught storytelling, technical expertise and creativity by industry professionals who are committed to nurturing talent and excellence in film and to developing you as a filmmaker of the future.
You will learn from the best from day one. Our team is made up of highly respected film and television professionals, including Senior Lecturer in Production Design, Jane Morton, who has more than 20 years professional experience and has worked with director Lynn Ramsey on her critically acclaimed, award-winning films. You will also work with award-winning cinematographers such as Philip Robertson, nominated for an Oscar in the Short Film (Live Action) category in 2016, for his work on Shok which was shot in Kosovo.
We will give you the opportunity to learn from the experiences of top industry experts. Guest lectures and masterclasses will enhance your education and give you an insight into the film industry today. Previous visitors have included Golden Globe and BAFTA award winning writer and director, Peter Kosminsky (The State, Wolf Hall).
