Jahangirnagar University is a public university in Bangladesh, based in Savar Upazila, Dhaka. It is one of the top and only fully residential universities in Bangladesh.
The university was established in 1970 by the Jahangirnagar Muslim University Ordinance of the government of Pakistan. Its first vice-chancellor, Mafizuddin Ahmed (PhD in chemistry, Penn State) took up office on 24 September 1970. The first group of students, a total of 150, were enrolled in four departments: Economics, Geography, Mathematics, and Statistics. Its formal inauguration was delayed until 12 January 1971, when the university was launched by Rear Admiral S. M. Ahsan, the chancellor.
It operated as a project until 1973, when the ‘Jahangirnagar Muslim University Act’ was amended as the ‘Jahangirnagar University Act’.
In 2014, the university had 16,781 students, 755 teachers, and 1,430 other employees.It holds 3rd position in public University ranking several times.
Location
The university stands on the west side of the Asian Highway, popularly known as the Dhaka-Aricha Road, and is 32 kilometres away from the capital. Spread over an area of 697.56 acres (2.8 km²), the campus surrounded by the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre (BPATC) on the south, and the Savar Cantonment on the northeast, on the north of which is the National Monument ( The shahid minar of JU is the tallest shahid minar in Bangladesh. It is designed by architect Robiul Hossain.
The university is an autonomous body managed by an executive council known as ‘the syndicate’. Its statutes need ratification by the Senate of the university, which meets at least once a year to do the same. The Senate passes the annual budget of the university, reviews its academic matters, and elects a panel of three nominees for the position of its vice-chancellor once every four years. the selection and appointment are made by the president of Bangladesh, who is the chancellor of the university. The chancellor also appoints the pro-vice-chancellor and the treasurer of the university.
The department of Drama and Dramatics of Jahangirnagar University is a pioneering platform of Bangladesh with a clear vision of promoting and experimenting indigenous theatre of Bangladesh. Besides it’s offer of under graduation, post-graduation, M.Phil. and PhD degrees in the field of Drama and Theatre, it intends to carry on the research and experiments on theatre and performance with a global perspective. The department emphasizes on the intensive study of world theatre history and theories along with it’s practical activities to prepare the students for next world of performing arts. Our curriculum looks forward to make this discipline a unique icon to mark the changes of civilization. Theory, method, laboratory courses and field work are all regarded as important components in the curriculum of students in this department, both in undergraduate and graduate level.
The department insists that all graduates become a knowledgeable practitioner with a strong passion for the indigenous aesthetics of our land and culture. We exercise an intimate and interactive teaching-learning relation with a view of understanding the true essence of this unique art. Theatre Studies is our acclaimed research journal which is published yearly to explore our research findings on Bangla Theatre with a comparative perspective to world theatre studies. We welcome all good of world to grasp the life of human through artistic communication of theater art.
The Department of Drama and Dramatics is within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Jahangirnagar University. It started it’s journey in 1986 with an objective to provide modern and broad education in theatre. This department is preparing students as well-trained theatre and drama professionals to meet the contemporary demand of national and international theatre and media. It also aims at investigating ‘performance’, ‘theatre’ and ‘drama’ through a combination of imaginative practice and rigorous academic study with a view point of critical and cultural theory. It undertakes comprehensive studies of performance and theatrical forms through an integrated program of-

We want to be distinctive by our primary concern with innovative contemporary performance and its return to the root of Bangla traditional Theatre. We focus on drama, theatre and performance of the twentieth century from a global perspective; we have keen interests in innovative performance, including experimental theatre, community and inter-cultural theatre, moreover we see drama and performance from a wider sense of ritual and social behavior.
The Drama and Dramatics department, Jahangirnagar University is a leading department in our country which has already discovered the lost ancient theatre heritage of Bangla theatre.
So, our objective is to provide an education in independent critical thinking and self-determined creative action. We aim at providing students with a considerate range of individual, practical and analytical skills, which can be successfully transmitted to a wide variety of working situations.
The Department of Drama and Dramatics of Jahangirnagar University considers such topics as dramaturgy, space and scene design, art of performance and the relationship between theatre and other arts (including film, music, dance and fine art); It experiments the form and content of plays while it observes the historical trend of actor, director and designers too. This involves the study of plays as texts for performance; some techniques and methods for actors, directors and theatre technicians.
