University degrees: Courses, Postgraduate, Short-Courses, Summer University
The Film Academy Baden-Württemberg was founded in 1991 as a non-profit limited liability company. The project-oriented curriculum triggers learning by doing during all the different stages of a film and television production. More than 300 experts from the film and media business instruct the students and oversee their projects.
About 200 films of all genres and formats are being produced every year by teams of students enrolled in scriptwriting, directing (documentary film, feature film, advertising film, educational and scientific film), cinematography, editing, animation, series formats, interactive media, production, film music and sound design, motion design and production design.
In 2002, the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg established its own Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Post-production. Substantially independent in terms of content, organisation and finance, the Institute is taking over responsibility for the teaching of all students following the Animation course, for the digital post-production of all projects produced at the Film Academy, and for organising the annual fmx – International Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Interactive Media in Stuttgart.

Since it was founded in 1991, Film Academy Baden-Württemberg has become one of the world’s leading film academies. The project-oriented “learning by doing” concept has greatly contributed to this. The students are taught and mentored by more than 300 highly-qualified experts from the film and media industries. Around 250 films covering a range of genres are created by teams of students each year. Several win prizes at film festivals. The overriding objective of the programme is to prepare students in the best possible way for a successful career in the film and media industries.
Europe’s unique Ludwigsburg Media Campus is spread across two neighbouring sites, which separate the Film Academy (with its Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Postproduction) from the Academy of Performing Arts Baden-Württemberg and the Atelier Ludwigsburg-Paris. This closeness results in several interdisciplinary collaborations which characterise programmes of study at the Film Academy in the same way as its wide range of international programmes, which are continuously redeveloped. During their studies, about ¼ of students take part in an international exchange with partners in such countries as Argentina, France, Canada, Poland, Lebanon, South Africa, or Israel.
