ESRA Group

ESRA is a French Film School, created in 1972; it is the only private school entitled by the French government to issue and deliver a State degree (BAC+3).
ESRA alumni include over 4,000 active professionals in the film industry. ESRA alumni work in the fields of cinema, television, music, sound engineering and animation film.
Based in Paris, ESRA also has campuses in Nice, on the French Riviera, since 1988, and in Rennes since 1999.
Each establishment includes a Film/Television department (ESRA), a Sound Engineering department (ISTS) and an Animation Film department (ESRA 3D). All teachings function on a three-year basis after the “BAC” (Bac = High School +1 year). In all departments, students choose their major in the third year of studies from a range of options.

ESRA NEW YORK
ESRA graduates can sign up for an optional fourth year of studies in NYC, during which they take lessons in English and shoot a short movie, in collaboration with actors from the New School for Drama.
ESRA also includes a Continuing Education department, which welcomes professionals and amateurs for further training courses ranging from 1 week to 9 months in length.

MASTER’S
2 years, one in FILM PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION, and one in SCRIPTWRITING for fiction and documentary.

Programme objective and content:

• Film Department:
  The three-year programmes in cinema give students a wide vision of filmmaking. The first two years give them a general vision of all roles and responsibilities involved in a production while teaching them not only the practical aspect of shooting but also the theoretical approach of storytelling and frame analysis. The third year is dedicated to a major chosen by the student in one of six fields (light and image, production, directing for cinema, editing, directing for TV) and a thesis production of a short movie.
• Sound Department:
  The three-year programmes in sound give students a wide vision of sound design. The first two years give them a general vision of all roles and responsibilities involved in a sound production while teaching them not only the practical aspect of shooting but also the theoretical approach of sound design, music, history and culture. The third year is dedicated to a major chosen by the student in one of three fields (sound recording in studio, live recording and sound system or music composition) and a thesis production which can be the complete soundtrack of a short movie.
• 3D Animation Department:
  The three-year programmes in animation give students theoretical knowledge of storytelling and framing for animation movies and also the intensive practical training needed on the main software, including 3Ds Max, MAYA, Photoshop and Nuke. Students graduate in their third year with an animated short movie.

Entry requirements:
Applicants need to be a high school graduate in France.
The admission process requires applicants:

• to be a high school graduate in France (or international equivalent)
• to send one cover letter to introduce themselves and describe their objectives
• to pass a general culture test at one of our exam sessions
• to take part in a film analysis group debate at one of our sessions
