University degrees: Courses
Course city: Sydney
In this course delivered over 12 weeks, you will learn knowledge and skills to prepare you for a career as a production accountant for film and screen content production. You will become familiar with and learn how to apply accounting technologies and workflows while developing a strong understanding of the stages of productions and their financial reporting obligations and requirements. You’ll gain specialised skills to work as an assistant production accountant with the aim to fast track to a career to production accounting, or be immediately able to be a production accountant on a low budget production.
Gain an understanding of the financial requirements and reconciliation at each stage of production and an understanding of compliance requirements
Skill up in payroll, accounts payable, petty cash, cost reporting and funding reporting as it relates to screen production
As well as a thorough understanding of the role of the production accountant in the production of a project, you’ll gain skills and knowledge complimentary to production management, producing and/or screen business.
This course is suitable for people with an accounting or bookkeeping background. You’ll already understand double entry bookkeeping and accounting to trial balance. Prior use of standard accouting packages like Zero or MYOB will be an advantage. Good communication skills are also vital for a good Production Accountant as you will be constantly dealing with a variety of people from key creatives to funding agencies.
There is a shortage of Production Accountants in the screen industry, so if you are someone with the above skills but a yen to work to in a more creative field, this might be a good path to follow. There will be some opportunities to explore Internships in the industry at the end of the course.
If you would like an introduction to the role of the production accountant, we run a two-day Production Accounting Fundamentals course. If you are more interested in production management we run Industry Certificates in Production Management for both Scripted and Unscripted productions.
If you have no industry experience and would like to do some introductory study in this area we recommend Intro to Producing and Budgeting Fundamentals.
If you are interested in developing your skills as a producer you may consider our Master of Screen Arts: Producing.
During the course there are two mandatory face to face weekend workshops in Sydney, the rest of the course is delivered online through our Online Learning Environment (Moodle) and using Zoom video conferencing. You will also be using specialist Production Accounting and Production software, mydaEs, which you will have access to online through the course.
You will need access to a desktop or laptop computer with camera, sound and a reliable internet connection for the evening Zoom video sessions.
Ideally you will bring your own laptop to the face-to-face workshops. If you cannot bring your own laptop, please let us know prior to the course commencing.
