The MSc in Film Studies allows you to explore crucial concepts in the development of film theory and film-philosophy with an emphasis on European and American auteur cinema.
Our focus on film theory and film-philosophy through European and American auteur cinema makes our programme unique.
We put serious film criticism, analysis and interpretation at the centre of our degree and we teach primarily through lectures, tutorials and seminars. Class sizes typically vary from 30 to 50 or more (core courses) and 5 to 18 students (option courses).
The MSc in Film Studies allows you to explore crucial concepts in the development of film theory and film-philosophy with an emphasis on auteur cinema. We aim to give our students the opportunity to engage seriously with the analysis of film.
The programme is designed to make you familiar with the major concepts and theories of film but also to explore the burgeoning field of film-philosophy. The programme will provide you with the analytical and critical tools for the investigation of individual films and to discuss these in relation to specific movements and genres as well as contexts of production and reception. You will also be introduced to recent developments in philosophical thinking about film. We expect our students to have a strong interest in cinema and its history.
Film Theory and Film-Philosophy are core courses alongside research methods training and a 15000 word dissertation in which you can explore any film-related subject in detail. Option courses change regularly to reflect staff research interests but in the past have included: Cinema Auteurs, Film and the Other Arts, Film and Gender, Film Adaptation, Film and Existentialism, Contemporary Japanese Cinema, Modernity in Chinese Cinema, Film Music, Mediating Film, Middle East and South Asian Cinema.
The Edinburgh Film Seminar allows you to hear from visiting international film scholars, critics and other film professionals. For more information please see the Related links below.
