Course city: Stockholm
The Master’s program in film and media with a focus on film editing is aimed at those who want to specialize and deepen your knowledge in film editing. The program is research preparatory and consists of two years of full-time studies at the advanced level.
A film clipper works with selection and joining of the recorded film material. It is in the editing that the final film story is formed and primarily film editing is about storytelling; about describing environments, people and their emotions. You should both be able to immerse yourself in what is being told and critically evaluate the recorded material and have the ability to hold the film’s story through all choices. The profession of filmmaker is highly creative and requires artistic sensitivity and analytical sharpness, as well as musicality, sense of rhythm and sound and image flow.
A film clipper also needs good collaborative ability and works, for example, close to the film’s director and producer. The workplace can be a production company within television and film.
Masters program in film and media with a focus on film editing
The Master’s program in film and media is an in-depth and research-preparatory education with a common program structure for all fields. In the education theory courses, students are introduced to different perspectives on knowledge, theory, reflection and artistic research methods.
The field of film editing is one of the team orientations within the master program that shapes film teams and collaborates. The students work together in common lab courses where they explore different forms of film, television and new media. Here you can try to cut different types of films, such as feature films, documentaries and art films – for different platforms and in shorter and longer formats. You gain an in-depth knowledge of filmmaking as a process from screenplay to finished film, where the final screen version is cut in the cutting room.
The education also has specialization-specific method courses. As a master student in film editing, you get to practice managing professional workflows and editing programs, deepening your knowledge of film editing mechanics, dramaturgy and script analysis, and exploring and formulating your own cutting methodology. The insights and knowledge that you gain in the orientation-specific courses are applied in the lab courses and film exercises that are done in teams.
During the course, you get many opportunities for meetings over traditional occupational boundaries, for example through elective courses that are common to the institutions of the university. Each student here identifies their need for additional knowledge.
The training will provide you with specialized knowledge that prepares for research and to work as a film cutter.
