University degrees: Postgraduate
Course city: Stockholm
The Master’s program in film and media focusing on film photography is aimed at those who want to specialize and deepen your knowledge in film photography. The program is research preparatory and consists of two years of full-time studies at the advanced level.
Film photography is about conveying a story visually, by shaping mood and feeling with the help of light, color, shape, room, composition, stage setting, movement and camera technical choices. The film photographer collaborates with the director and the other artistic functions of a film team to best present a film story. The work includes leading and distributing the work of the team that surrounds the cinematographer and being responsible for budget and technical know-how throughout the process. The basis for a cinematographer is personal storytelling, craftsmanship and collaboration.
Masters program in film and media with a focus on film photography
The Master’s program in film and media is an in-depth and research-preparatory education with a common program structure for all fields. In the education theory courses, students are introduced to different perspectives on knowledge, theory, reflection and artistic research methods.
The focus on film photography is one of the team orientations within the master program that shapes film teams and collaborates. The students work together in common lab courses where they explore different forms of film, television and new media. Here you can choose to shoot different types of films, such as feature films, documentaries and art films – for different platforms and in short and long formats. You get an in-depth insight into filmmaking as a process from script to finished film.
The education also has specialization-specific method courses. As a master student in film photography, you get to practice handling professional workflows. You deepen your knowledge of lighting, composition, stage setting, work management and managing a script for visual storytelling. This also includes planning of safety aspects in a sustainable professional life. Teaching is also provided in grading, digital effects and post production. The insights and knowledge that you gain in the orientation-specific courses are applied in the lab courses and film exercises that are done in teams.
During the course, you get many opportunities for meetings over traditional occupational boundaries, for example through elective courses that are common to the institutions of the university. Each student here identifies their need for additional knowledge.
The training will give you specialized knowledge that prepares for research and to work as a cinematographer.
