University degrees: Courses
Course length: 1 March - 15 April
Course city: Stockholm
The course is aimed at those who work with producing moving images and feel the need to understand how color is used as narrative technology. From production designers to film photographers, directors, editors … the importance of color in film is undeniable. As the digital color processing tools have become both more powerful and more accessible, the need to spread knowledge about color history, theory, aesthetics and archival qualities has become more important.
Through a combination of practical exercises, theoretical readings and critical reflections, we will answer the following questions during the course: How do we talk about color in film among film workers? with a production designer? with a colorist? with a cinematographer? What are our historical reference frames? How have technological advances affected the use of color in motion pictures? How do we create or communicate the creation of a visual “look”?
The course contains both theoretical literature and report writing, as well as practical tool training and film examples. This combination gives us both a historical understanding of how the film has changed (monotone, duotone, Technicolor … Instagram) and the ability to describe, not only your own color strategy, but also the strategies used by other students and prominent filmmakers.
The course is led by Tom Brennan, member of the Colorist Society International (CSI), associate member of the Swedish Film Photographers Association (FSF), and post-production supervisor at the Department of Film and Media.
